This time of year is murder on my husband. He usually ends up with allergy induced asthma and coughs for months straight which leaves him exhausted and me frustrated because he won’t just go to the doctor, get some meds, and end the madness. He finally (finally!!) went to the doc and got his usual inhaler with a side of antihistamines, so maybe I will have him (and his much needed help) back sometime soon. Without his help in the evenings I always seem to fall behind in everything, hence the mounds of both dishes and laundry and the lack of blog posts.
This week was devoted to the squid, the rainbow, and it’s tiny little mate, the leprechaun. Odd mix, for sure, but made for some good times. Let me lay it out in bullet form……………
- Monday – We started out strong with the Roy G. Biv song from They Might Be Giants. I thought it was cute, utterly adorable in fact, but my admiration pales in comparison to my boy’s. We have listened to it every day (multiple times a day) this week. Thanks to the glory that is the iphone we have shared it with anyone that would bear it. The best part is, the kid learned all the colors of the rainbow from this song and I bet he will never forget them. We also began the process of making rainbow flowers. First we created water in every hue of the rainbow and added a plain, white carnation to each cup. We continued to chart the progress throughout the week.
- Tuesday – We learned about squid. Giant squid, Humboldt squid, and the tiny ones that are so yummy once deep fried and served with marinara. We also made our very own squid in a bottle. Ours was not as cute as the one in the link. Oh well, add it to my “Nailed It” file. We also made a rainbow gumball necklace. It gave me a chance to break out the dusty Dremel. First, I drilled holes through each of the gumballs. I did three sets of the rainbow colors. Purple did the stand-in for both indigo and violet.
Then I had Little One string them in order and behold he is the proud owner of a gumball rainbow necklace, that I think is beautifully complimented by the “I love dirt” T-shirt. :-)
- Wednesday - Squid dissection day!! Our local science museum holds science classes for homeschool kids twice a month. This is only our second class, but I think it’s something we will be continuing. In our dissection we got to see the squid’s lens, that is much like a small clear marble. We also got to see the beak (aptly named), ink sac (would you believe it’s silver?), and pen (the spine-like thing that looks like a clear feather quill). When the dissection was over he was instructed to break open the ink sac, dip his pen in the ink and write his name on the butcher paper covered table. Can you say cool as all get out?
- That brings us to Thursday. You might be saying to yourself, why Thursday isn’t the end of the week! Why is this broad doing a weekly wrap up and ending with Thursday? Has she been dipping into the Bailey’s? No, no I haven’t. I’m ending our school for the week a smidge early so we can enjoy a beach day with Little One’s cousin tomorrow. As I type this it is pouring buckets of rain, so cross your fingers that tomorrow is nicer.
Today we did a little subtraction using leftover gumballs as counters.
And graphed some Lucky Charms.
I found the worksheet here.
And did our final check of our rainbow flowers. The violet one never did get any color. I have no clue what happened. Dud carnation maybe?
